Leny Yoro has explained how former Lille team-mate Angel Gomes helped convince him to join Manchester United.

In his first interview as a United player, Yoro revealed that Rio Ferdinand wasn't the only former Red Devils player who helped convince him to make the switch to England. He was regularly in touch with Gomes and became firm friends with the English midfielder.

Gomes made his senior United debut at the age of just 16 in May 2017 and knows more than most about what it means to have the spotlight of attention so young. He made the switch to Lille in 2020 and has been a regular for the Ligue 1 side since 2021, playing alongside teenage prodigy Yoro for the past two seasons.

Yoro told club media: "We spoke a lot about United. [Gomes] just told me this is the biggest club in the world. You know, the fans, even the way to play, the training camp, everything is really big, is really incredible. Every day I spoke with him about this and it helped me a lot to come here. He’s really happy for me. He sent me a message directly [after the transfer was completed]."

After impressing in a 45-minute appearance against Rangers for his unofficial debut, Yoro is set for more game time as the United squad heads to the United States for the next leg of pre-season. Games against Arsenal, Real Betis and Liverpool will be played in Los Angeles, San Diego and South Carolina respectively.
