Summary: Southampton moved closer to the Premier League’s 40-point safety net after playing out a tame goalless draw with Swansea at the Liberty Stadium.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side are now 12th in the table on 39 points and almost assured of playing top-flight football next season, while the Swans poor form continued as they failed to win for a fifth game on the spin.
The home side started well and were the better side in the opening stages without threatening Artur Boruc in the Saints goal.
However, the visitors soon hit their stride and Jack Cork forced Michel Vorm into a save with the Dutch goalkeeper keeping out Rickie Lambert’s free kick later on.
Michu headed over for Swansea in the second half before Boruc made two superb stops to deny Jonathan de Guzman and Nathan Dyer to ensure the game would end in a stalemate.
Michael Laudrup post match…“To look at the positives, after conceding two goals in every one of the last four games, we have kept a clean sheet and stopped Southampton winning and joining us. Fulham lost today and West Ham won to join us on 42 points.”
Mauricio Pochettino post match…”Maybe we should have won because we created the best chances but their goalkeeper made two outstanding saves. I don’t think that we lacked impetus, but we did not have the fluency we normally have.”
Good day for…Michel Vorm: Swansea have shipped goals like it is going out of fashion in recent games. Luckily for them Vorm was on form today, making a number of crucial saves to record only their second clean sheet since January
Bad day for…Luke Moore: A difficult afternoon for the Swans forward who just couldn’t force himself into the game during the first half. Unsurprisingly he was hooked off by Michael Laudrup at the break.
